Appliances and Special Utensils

Ingredients

For the Wontons:
– 1/2 lb ground pork
– 1/4 cup finely chopped shrimp (optional)
– 2 green onions, finely chopped
– 1 tbsp soy sauce
– 1 tbsp oyster sauce
– 1 tsp sesame oil
– 1 tsp grated ginger
– 1 clove garlic, minced
– 1/4 tsp white pepper
– 20-25 wonton wrappers

For the Soup:
– 6 cups chicken broth
– 1 tbsp soy sauce
– 1 tbsp rice wine (or dry sherry)
– 1 tsp sesame oil
– 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
– 2 cloves garlic, smashed
– 3-4 baby bok choy, chopped
– 1 carrot, sliced
– 2 green onions, chopped
– Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wonton Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, chopped shrimp, green onions, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and white pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.

  2. Assemble Wontons: Place a wonton wrapper on a cutting board. Add about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of the wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, and press to seal. Bring the two opposite corners together and press to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling.

  3. Prepare the Broth: In a large pot, combine the chicken broth, soy sauce, rice wine, sesame oil, sliced ginger, and smashed garlic. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Let the broth cook for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

  4. Cook the Wontons: In a small saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add the wontons in batches and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until they float to the top and the filling is cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked wontons to a plate.

  5. Add Vegetables: To the simmering broth, add the chopped bok choy, sliced carrot, and chopped green onions. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

  6. Combine and Serve: Add the cooked wontons to the broth and let them warm through for about 1-2 minutes. Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste. Use a soup ladle to divide the soup and wontons into bowls.

  7. Enjoy: Serve your Wonton Soup hot, garnished with additional chopped green onions if desired. Enjoy the comforting and savory flavors of this homemade classic!
