Appliances/Utensils:
Ingredients:
For the Pita Bread:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 cucumber, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced with a Garlic press
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
For the Pita Bread:
- Mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a Mixing bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
-
Add the flours, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
-
Knead the dough on a floured Cutting Board for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough in a lightly oiled Mixing bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
-
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a baking sheet inside to heat up.
-
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disc about 1/4-inch thick using a Rolling pin.
-
Bake each disc on the preheated baking sheet for 4-5 minutes, until they puff up and are lightly golden.
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- Grate the cucumber using a Cheese Grater and squeeze out excess water using a Cheese cloth.
-
Combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and dill in a Mixing bowl.
-
Season with salt and pepper to taste, and mix well.
-
Chill the Tzatziki in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
Tips and Suggestions:
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour for the pita.
- Add a touch of mint to the Tzatziki for a refreshing twist.
- If you prefer a thicker Tzatziki, strain the yogurt in a Cheese cloth before using.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve the Pita warm with a generous side of Tzatziki sauce. It’s perfect as an appetizer or alongside grilled meats and salads.
