Originating from Los Angeles, the French Dip Sandwich is an American classic known for its tender roast beef, crusty bread, and savory au jus for dipping. Despite its name, the sandwich isn’t French; it’s thought to be named for the French rolls it’s traditionally served on. The interplay between the juicy beef and the flavorful broth makes it a favorite comfort food, perfect for sharing at gatherings or enjoying as a hearty meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of beef chuck roast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 French rolls
  • 8 slices of provolone cheese
  • Optional: horseradish sauce for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).

  2. Season the beef chuck roast with salt and black pepper on all sides.

  3. Heat the Dutch oven over medium-high heat and add olive oil.

  4. Sear the roast in the Dutch oven until browned on all sides, then remove and set aside.

  5. Add sliced onion and minced garlic to the Dutch oven, sautéing until fragrant.

  6. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.

  7. Return the roast to the Dutch oven, cover, and transfer to the preheated oven. Cook for 3 hours or until the beef is tender.

  8. Remove the beef from the Dutch oven and let it rest for 10 minutes on a cutting board before slicing thinly with a sharp knife.

  9. Strain the juices from the Dutch oven into a saucepan and simmer to reduce slightly for the au jus.

  10. Preheat the large frying pan over medium heat and add the French rolls, cut side down, to toast lightly.

  11. Layer sliced beef and provolone cheese inside each roll.

  12. Use kitchen tongs to dip each sandwich briefly into the au jus before serving.
