Pita and Tzatziki is a delightful combination often found in Greek cuisine, renowned for its fresh flavors and simple preparation. Pita, a type of flatbread, is perfect for scooping up Tzatziki, a tangy yogurt-based sauce with cucumber and garlic. This pairing is a staple in Mediterranean diets, celebrated for its refreshing taste and health benefits. It’s a popular appetizer or snack, loved for its ability to complement a wide range of dishes and its suitability for various dietary preferences.

Servings: Serves 4 people

Appliances/Utensils:

Ingredients:

For the Pita Bread:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced with a Garlic press
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

For the Pita Bread:

  1. Mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a Mixing bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. Add the flours, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured Cutting Board for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled Mixing bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and place a baking sheet inside to heat up.

  6. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disc about 1/4-inch thick using a Rolling pin.

  7. Bake each disc on the preheated baking sheet for 4-5 minutes, until they puff up and are lightly golden.

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  1. Grate the cucumber using a Cheese Grater and squeeze out excess water using a Cheese cloth.

  2. Combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and dill in a Mixing bowl.

  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and mix well.

  4. Chill the Tzatziki in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

Tips and Suggestions:

  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour for the pita.
  • Add a touch of mint to the Tzatziki for a refreshing twist.
  • If you prefer a thicker Tzatziki, strain the yogurt in a Cheese cloth before using.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve the Pita warm with a generous side of Tzatziki sauce. It’s perfect as an appetizer or alongside grilled meats and salads.
