Shrimp Cocktail

Shrimp cocktail is a classic appetizer that has been enjoyed for decades, often seen at parties and on restaurant menus. Originating from the United States, it became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dish is known for its simplicity and the perfect balance of fresh shrimp paired with a tangy, spicy cocktail sauce. It’s a delightful starter that is both refreshing and satisfying, making it a favorite at gatherings.

Servings: Serves 4 people

Appliances/Utensils:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:

1. Fill a large pot for boiling with water. Squeeze the juice of one lemon half into the pot, then add the lemon half itself along with the salt.

2. Bring the water to a boil. Once boiling, add the shrimp and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque.

3. Remove the shrimp from the pot using kitchen tongs and transfer them to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Let them cool for a few minutes.

4. In a mixing bowl, combine the ketchup, horseradish, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mix well to create the cocktail sauce.

5. Drain the shrimp and pat them dry with a paper towel. Slice a few more lemon wedges for serving.

6. Arrange the shrimp on a platter with a bowl of cocktail sauce in the center. Garnish with fresh parsley and the lemon wedges.

Tips and Suggestions:

  • For a spicier cocktail sauce, add more hot sauce to taste.
  • If you prefer, you can grill or roast the shrimp instead of boiling for a different flavor profile.
